Wine and Ice Cream

Nothing welcomes a three day weekend more than an extra glass of wine or an extra scoop of ice cream. Most of us likely enjoy these two things separately, but why not enjoy them together? Japan has taken to sharing their best pairings of alcohol and ice cream, and if you are in the mood for a tasty new combination, you might just find a brilliant suggestion here that you haven’t thought of yet.

What probably started as a throwaway “I’m done with the day” tweet, has snowballed into many Japanese Twitter users tweeting their favorite pairings of alcohol and ice cream. For most of them, it’s not just any ice cream either, but Häagen-Dazs specifically. Perhaps it’s because Japanese people think Häagen-Dazs is a luxurious ice cream available only to those who work hard and really deserve it. Although when you look at some of the alcohol the ice cream is being paired with, it makes us think these people are just throwing together whatever they can find at their local convenience store.

Some people have even found the inalienable truth that ice cream pretty much goes with anything. Also seems to be a good way to get rid of wine you don’t really want to drink anymore…but just can’t bear to pour down the drain.

It wasn’t long before people started to try Häagen-Dazs with other alcohols and surprisingly enough (or not surprisingly) it even goes well with sake (nihonshu).

Since Japan loves seasonal things, plenty of people have opted to try chestnut Häagen-Dazs (a fall flavor) with booze.

If you can’t stand the taste of beer, pairing it with ice cream makes the bitter taste go down really easy. “A spoon full of sugar” really does work.

An obvious pairing would be a nice dark beer and simple vanilla ice cream. Clearly, other people have thought so as well.
