Thanks to Japan’s love of fashion and animals, you can walk into just about any pet shop and find cute outfits for your dog. From styles that copy human duds such as shirts and dresses to playful costumes that look like cartoon characters or other animals, you can easily put together a wardrobe a pooch that’s as extensive as that of its human owner.

On the other hand, there’s a lot less to choose from in off-the-rack clothing for a pet squirrel. It turns out that you don’t have to go to the pet supply store to have your loveable little companion looking dashing, though, or even be handy with a needle and thread. All you need is some leftover veggies.

A squirrel may seem like an odd choice for a pet, but given that they’re much less common in Japan than the U.S., plus Japan’s more liberal pet ownership laws, there are a few Japanese animal lovers who pick one over the more pedestrian choices of a dog, cat, or hamster. One such-minded individual is Twitter user Manyan Kihon Sutaba.

Perhaps feeling just a little jealous of all the dogs in the neighborhood that are always dressed up in the latest styles, Manyan Kihon Sutaba’s pet squirrel decided to play with its food, a leaf of cabbage, in the most fashionable way possible.

Aside from the striking visual effect, there’s another advantage to this getup. With other pet clothes, there’s the problem of what to do with them after the animal has outgrown them or the owner has gotten tired of them. That’s not a problem here, though, since the cape is edible.

Stylish, affordable, and environmentally friendly, there’s a lot to like about this outfit even before you realize it also doubles as animal kingdom Attack on Titan cosplay.
