With Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain now available, gamers are hunkering down to complete Hideo Kojima’s final Metal Gear outing, and the last couple of days have seen a flurry of uploads to YouTube and gaming sites from players wanting to show off their discoveries in the huge open world.
One such discovery has people lamenting the cancellation of Silent Hills, the horror game that was at one time to be Kojima’s next project, all over again. Despite Konami’s attempts to erase its existence by removing it from the Playstation Store, P.T., the playable teaser for the cancelled game, can’t be wiped from gamers’ minds that easily, and apparently not from the company’s latest hit, either.
P.T. was a mysterious game released on the Playstation Store last year that turned out to be a demo of sorts for an upcoming reboot of the long-running and well-loved Silent Hill franchise which would bring together the dream team of creator Hideo Kojima, celebrated director Guillermo del Toro, and actor Norman Reedus. The demo promised a return to form for the franchise with tension, gore, and scares galore.
Unfortunately, as we all now know, the Silent Hills project turned out to be doomed from the start, as Kojima announced he would be leaving Konami following swirling rumors that the legendary game creator had been fired by his long-term employer. Internal development studio Kojima Productions was dissolved and Kojima’s name was removed from materials relating to his final big project, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, despite him being the driving force behind the entire series.
With The Phantom Pain now on sale, Kojima has officially left with Konami, but he’s left behind some traces of P.T. for fans to discover. Apparently on the second map of the game a radio in a certain hut can be heard playing a creepy broadcast that should send chills down the spine of anyone who enjoyed P.T.
Check out the video for more details on where you can find the easter egg in the game.
Was this easter egg added before Kojima knew of his and Konami’s imminent breakup? Or did he slip it in afterwards as a cheeky “screw you” to the bigwigs at Konami? We may never know, and we’re not sure of what’s in store for Kojima in the future, either, but with a name as well-respected as his, he’s sure to continue to make waves in the industry with or without Konami’s backing.
