It seems that there is nothing you can’t create within Minecraft. For the uninitiated, Minecraft is a video game where players create things out of blocks in a 3D cube world. It is self-described on the game’s website as “a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.” One genius player has gone to the extreme by recreating the video game Pokémon Red within Minecraft. It doesn’t get any meta than that.
Posting to a reddit forum, user Magib1 announced that he has created a script from scratch within Minecraft whereby he has recreated the Pokémon Red video game. Pokémon Red was the first Pokémon video game to ever be released, but if you thought that was old school, he’s taken it one step further by recreating the game on a virtual classic Game Boy. And by “classic,” we mean the old black and white Game Boy. That’s right, kids. There was a day and age when not all video games were in colour.
This is not the first time this Redditor has created a video game within a video game. His first success was building Pac-Man within Minecraft. He then decided that Pokémon Red would be his latest challenge. His latest project is apparently still in the early stages of development but we certainly think it looks impressive, especially considering it’s only utilising the Vanilla version of Minecraft.
“As the creator I just want to make clear that this is still very early in development,” posted Magib1 on the Reddit Minecraft forum earlier this month. “That being said, I’m glad to see that people are generally interested in it. I enjoy pushing Minecraft’s limits, and after finishing up Pac-Man I felt this would be a fun challenge!”,
And pushing limits he is, because, of course, no Pokemon game is complete without the Pokedex, which he has also recreated to go along with the game.
The introduction of command blocks has made this possible, by effectively treating Minecraft as a programming tool. User-specified commands can be created, and are able to be used a thousand times over to create a systematic script. However, Magib1 has indicated that it will still be several months to build it all before his newest project will be complete.
The high level of freedom that Minecraft allows players and the ability to create anything imaginable is the beauty of this video game which is taking over the world one block at a time.
