Capsules are only the beginning of what this new Tokyo capsule hotel has to offer.
Capsule hotels have been really stepping up their game over the past few years. Expanding on their original premise of literally being just a capsule to sleep in, some providers of compact, budget-priced accommodations are now experimenting with themes such as letting guests feel like they’re sleeping in a bookstore or samurai castle.
The Anshin Oyado capsule hotel set to open soon in Tokyo’s Akihabara neighborhood doesn’t offer anything quite so fanciful, instead opting to give guests the sort of amenities they’d expect in a normal, non-capsule hotel.

Sure, you’ll still be sleeping in a bunk, but it’ll be a bunk outfitted with high-quality Simmons-brand bedding, a tablet on which to play games, read manga, or watch free movies, and a 17-inch monitor if you want to enjoy the content on a larger screen. A few capsules, dubbed “theater rooms,” are equipped with even larger 40-inch monitors, and guests can also borrow VR headsets.
Just like your body needs sleep, it also needs food, so the Akihabara Anshin Oyado provides a free morning meal to all guests in the form of all-you-can-eat chicken curry, the breakfast of champions (champions who also love curry, anyway). Free soft drinks are available from self-serve vending machines located on the hotel premises, and if you’re looking for a nightcap or two, you can buy sake and microbrew beers at the hotel’s bar, which also has free-to-play dart machines.

This being Akihabara, Japan’s otaku mecca, of course there’s a shelf of print manga for guests to read, and also PCs where you can use the Internet to check your email or read RocketNews24. If your stay at Anshin Oyado was unplanned, you’ll be happy to know that the hotel also sells shirts, underwear, and socks, so as long as you don’t mind wearing the same pants for two days in a row, you’ll be good to go the next day.
Actually, if you don’t want to keep wearing the same pair of pants, you can wash them in the on-site laundromat. In either case, you’ll of course want to wash yourself, and the hotel has you well-covered on that front, since there’s a hot spring-style man-made mineral bath in the basement.
Many capsule hotels only accept guests of one gender, and in Anshin Oyado Akihabara’s case it’s men, (although ladies also have a capsule-based place to stay in the neighborhood). The hotel opens July 27, with rates starting at 4,180 yen a night. Reservations can be made here.
