The first Cardcaptor Sakura anime film will experience a revival in selected theaters throughout Japan.
The TV anime adaptation of CLAMP’s popular Cardcaptor Sakura manga series aired between April 1998 and March 2000. Its original run saw the release of Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie (which debuted in 1999), followed by Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card (premiering in 2000), which served as both a sequel and a finale to the TV series. The two films won back-to-back Animation Kobe Theatrical Film Awards in the years of their release, cementing their place in the hearts of anime fans everywhere.
In celebration of the original Cardcaptor Sakura manga’s 20th anniversary this year, monthly manga anthology Nakayoshi has been serializing the new Clear Card Arc since July and a new animated project was also announced to be in the works. Longtime fans of the series in Japan will soon have even more cause to rejoice since it was recently revealed that the first Cardcaptor Sakura film will experience a theatrical revival beginning on January 21, 2017 in selected movie theaters across Japan. Directed by Morio Asaka and produced by studio Madhouse, this is the film in which Sakura journeys to Syaoran’s home city of Hong Kong and encounters a powerful spirit once spurned by Clow Reed.
The revival’s official website lists nine movie theaters across Japan that will be participating in the film’s revival release, located in the cities of Tokyo (Shinjuku and Ikebukuro neighborhoods), Kawasaki, Osaka (Umeda and Namba), Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo (the complete list can be found here). Advance tickets may be purchased at those locations beginning on December 3 for 1,400 yen (US$13.45 for general admission) or 900 yen (children), and all purchases come with a specially illustrated Cardcaptor Sakura postcard.
