It may look like an ordinary sandwich, but apparently, they did a pretty good job of making it revolting!
As we reported previously, a Tokyo Ghoul themed cafe recently opened in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district this past week in advance of the hit manga/anime’s live action film scheduled for release in July this year.
Now, while the creative foods and beverages on the menu and the various Tokyo Ghoul merchandise available at the cafe certainly look fascinating, one item in particular seems to be causing a buzz on the Japanese Internet, and for an unusual reason — it tastes absolutely disgusting!
The offensive item in question is a deceptively ordinary looking sandwich literally called the “foul-tasting sandwich” (mazui sandwich), which you can try for 480 yen (US$4.34) with any other food or dessert order.
For those of you unfamiliar with Tokyo Ghoul, the series takes place in a world where man-eating ghouls with tremendous physical strength and regenerative powers live among humans, and one of the premises of the story is that anything other than human flesh, including ordinary human food, tastes absolutely revolting to ghouls.
In one scene, after taking a bite of a regular sandwich, the protagonist says that “the bread tastes like flavorless sponge and the lettuce tastes horrendously grassy”, which is what they’ve tried to recreate at the cafe.
▼ The cafe’s official Twitter account actually warns you with a tweet captioned, “The foul-tasting sandwich really does taste awful. Let us reiterate: it really does taste bad. Customers ordering the sandwich are forewarned.”

ただいまカフェは30分〜1時間待ちとなっております。
話題のまずいサンドイッチは本当にまずいです。もう一度言いますね。本当に、まずいです。
心してお召し上がりください…。#東京喰種カフェ pic.twitter.com/qaW7kxF1zr
▼ They’ve also jokingly recommended that customers planning to eat the sandwich practice the technique used in the manga by ghouls to eat unpalatable human food: “Avoid chewing as it spreads the awful taste through your mouth, making you want to vomit. Instead, just bite clean through the food once and then swallow it quickly.”

So how successful were they in creating a horrible-tasting sandwich? It seems they did a pretty good job based on Twitter user @_otofu’s tweet below.
▼ @_otofu’s comment reads, “The foul-tasting sandwich from Tokyo Ghoul Cafe — made with greens, cooked egg and some kind of strong gorgonzola-like cheese containing grassy leaf bits sandwiched between thick slices of a bland hanpen fishcake-like material. The combination makes for a vomit-like smell, which makes you feel like vomiting yourself. Managed to finish it, but you need to be prepared if you’re going to order this.
注文時は要覚悟 pic.twitter.com/aJvNoAlJFh

And here’s a post by another Twitter user who also had the sandwich.
▼ User @K_Rosewald explains, “It’s really not the taste, but the smell. The smell in your mouth feels like you vomited rotten curry mixed with milk. I know it’s not a bad thing for people to be curious about this sandwich, but I really want to shout out: You should NOT eat this.”

Well, that actually almost makes you want to try the sandwich to see how bad it is, doesn’t it? We have no way of knowing whether it really is as awful as how a regular sandwich would taste to a Ghoul, but if any of you out there are brave enough to try it at the Ikebukuro Parco Department Store, we hope you let us know how vile it is!
