This isn’t your typical Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola drink.
In April 2017, popular Japanese interior brand Mujirushi Ryohin, also known as Mujirushi or just Muji, unveiled its original cola recipe, “Carbonated Cola.” Rather than going off of Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola’s recipe, Muji started off sweet and simple, using cola essence, no added dyes, and no added sweeteners. While it would be a stretch to say it’s healthy, it does sound like it would be a hit with those who are looking to cut down on sugar or products with a lot of additives.
So, what exactly is in it? Along with cola essence (extracted from cola nuts), it also uses naturally-derived ingredients such as lemon juice to add some flavor and sweetness. With no added dyes, it has a slight caramel hue. It’s also non-caffeinated, so if you’re trying to cut down on that high-and-crash you get from coffee or energy drinks, this is the product for you.
Now for the most important question: how does it taste? Judging by the feedback seen on Twitter and Instagram, the consensus seems to be “definitely not like Coca-Cola, but not awful.” There are those who love it (especially the smell!) and those who give it a solid thumbs down. Here are some specific reviews we found on SNS.
▼ “Muji Cola: made from coconuts, and without any added dyes or sweeteners. It’s kind of like a carbonated Anzu Bou*, maybe? It’s good if you try not to think of it as cola. Is today ‘Not Actual Cola Day’ or something?“

▼ “I don’t hate it, but it’s nice to have once in a while. It’s good if you like cinnamon.“
▼ “A refreshing break.”
