Friends don’t let friends drive and eat ramen at the same time.
One day while I was walking up the street, I glanced over to see a truck driver perched over his steering wheel, clutching it with both forearms while he manipulated a pair of chopsticks with one hand hand held a large cup of ramen in the other.
It was quite a sight and left me with many unanswered questions, such as “How come that man isn’t dead yet?” and “Of all the possible foods he could have chosen to eat while driving, does a worse one exist?”
Eating while driving is generally a bad idea, but many people do it anyway and without incident. However, occupying your hands with a half-liter of boiling hot water and one of the most coordination-demanding utensils known to man really takes takes it to another level.
Apparently it wasn’t an isolated incident either. At 7:30 a.m. on 2 September a Sapporo convenience store placed a call the emergency 110 number that “a car crashed into the store.” Although the store was open and customers were inside, no one is said to have been injured.

The police investigation revealed that the driver was eating instant ramen at the time. Reports indicate that it was a particularly spicy ramen that had caught the driver off-guard and made him spill it. The boiling hot contents splattered everywhere, causing him to lose control of the steering wheel, veering the car sharply to the right, smashing through the storefront window.
The driver was only 18 years old and had just received his license prior to the accident. Perhaps it was good he learned the dangers of eating soup and driving early on and without anyone getting hurt. So let that also be a lesson to all of us not to eat spicy ramen and drive.
Actually, you probably shouldn’t eat anything while you’re driving…. Come to think of it, knock it off with the whole driving thing all together. Where do you have to be that’s so important anyway?
It’s better for all of us to just stay home and read SoraNews24 all day long, every day. Look, here’s a fun story about a pink dog-poop dog that cleans the streets of Tokyo.
