Visit the fashion mecca this month to snag some limited Halloween-themed Conan goodies and solve a spooky mystery.
The first days of October are finally upon us. Whether the coming of fall signals crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin spice lattes, or the departure of those noisy cicadas (finally!) to you, Detective Conan (Case Closed in English) fans have another reason to celebrate as this month marks a special collaboration between the popular anime and one of Japan’s most iconic shopping meccas.
Shibuya 109 is a landmark fashion building in Shibuya, the popular youth district of Tokyo where teenagers go to buy the latest trendy clothes and entertainment. It’s located just a short walk across the famous scramble intersection in front of Shibuya Station, making it an easy target for hordes of shoppers visiting the area. While it’s not quite the haven for Japanese subculture fashion that it was during the gyaru heydey of the 1990s, many fashion enthusiasts nevertheless make a sort of pilgrimage to the building to pay their respects for its sheer influence on youth culture.
If you happen to visit Shibuya 109 in its original Tokyo location or more recent branches in Osaka (Shibuya 109 Abeno) and Kagoshima (Shibuya 109 Kagoshima) between October 7th and the 31st, you’ll be able to enjoy not only fashion but a special collaborative campaign with Detective Conan as well!
▼ Conan characters from left to right decked out in their Halloween best:
Toru Amuro, Ran Mori, Conan Edogawa, Ai Haibara, and Shuichi Akai.
Each of the Shibuya 109 locations will include a limited-time pop-up store where customers can find Halloween-themed Conan goods including key chains, badges, folders, character memos, mugs, hand towels, scrunchies, masking tape, and candies, to name just a few. If you purchase more than 1,500 yen (US$13) worth of Conan merchandise, you’ll also receive a random complimentary postcard illustrated with one of the five characters pictured above.
Here’s a look at some of the items for sale:
▼ The full range of products includes even more
popular characters from the franchise.
Shoppers who spend more than 3,000 yen can also receive a novelty badge during the campaign (October 20 to 31 at the Tokyo and Osaka locations and October 7 to 9 at the Kagoshima branch).
Finally, the following stickers are limited to the Tokyo location only. Anyone who makes a purchase at Shibuya 109 can receive one randomly selected sticker out of the five pictured below.
But the promotion isn’t just about the goods — this wouldn’t be a Conan campaign without a mystery, after all! To that end, here’s the backstory to the mystery for visitors to help solve:
Recently Ran, her friend Sonoko, and Conan went to visit Shibuya 109 to view the phantom “Halloween Jewel” brought from overseas that had been on exhibition there… only to discover that it was stolen! Is the Phantom Thief Kaito Kid behind this latest heist?
While the whereabouts of the jewel remain unknown, the thief left a puzzle for Conan and the others to solve. You too can receive a puzzle solving kit if you purchase more than 3,000 yen worth of goods between the specified dates (October 13 to 19 in Tokyo and Osaka, October 7 to 31 in Kagoshima).
Anyone who manages to solve the mystery will receive a special original sticker as proof of their Conan-level detective skills. If only the Conan Cafes were still open to enjoy a victory mystery-solved dinner at….
On a last note, the Detective Conan manga just recently surpassed its 1,000th chapter and the anime has aired its 875th episode as of this writing. It’s still a mystery as to when the series will end, but we certainly won’t complain if there are more similar collaborations in the years to come!
