A US Navy sailor has been arrested by Japanese police after wandering around naked and urinating in a manga cafe near Yokohama station, Kanagawa prefecture last Friday.
The incident comes just weeks after the US Military imposed a curfew between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. after two soldiers were arrested for the alleged rape of a woman in Okinawa, causing outcry in the Japanese media.
According to reports, the sailor admits that he urinated in the cafe, but absolutely draws the line at the despicable act of stripping off in a public place…
The sailor, 23-year-old petty officer third class Oscar Weigle, was arrested at around 3:15 a.m. last Friday after staff and fellow patrons at the 24-hour-manga cafe found him staggering about between booths in the computer-furnished cafe.
Manga cafes exist in all shapes and sizes in Japan, many with private booths or even small rooms that can be rented by the hour and are furnished with everything from a fully-equipped computer to reclining chairs and drinks fridges. Thanks to their convenience and affordability, many people use the hotel-like establishments as a place to bunk down for the night if they’ve missed the last train home or are in need of dirt-cheap accommodation.
Weigle and an unnamed 21-year-old serviceman arrived at the cafe at around 12:30 a.m. and quickly retired to separate booths. Staff on duty at the time reported that the two men had appeared drunk, but that since they were able to communicate their wishes and pay for their booths they had been allowed in.
A few hours later, however, petty officer Weigle left his room and began wandering up and down the hallways shouting and swearing.
With other patrons poking their heads out to see what all the commotion was, staff struggled with Weigle but were unable to quiet him. When the sailor turned to face the wall of his friend’s room and began urinating against it, the staff felt that they had no choice but to call the police, who promptly arrived and arrested the drunken sailor.
Despite eye witnesses stressing that he had been wandering around naked, Weigle contends that, while he did take a widdle against the wall, he had been partially clothed.
The incident has further fanned flames amid a heated debate concerning the US’ military presence in Japan, with many arguing that it is time for army bases- which have existed since the close of World War II – to be relocated or closed completely.
Perhaps those Chinese internet cafes aren’t such bad places after all…
