Making oneself into a fully posable action figure was once a mere pipe dream for those of us who weren’t movie stars, rock stars or the combination of both that is Mr. Sato. But now with technology and some craftsmanship anyone can immortalize themselves in the medium of dolls… until they come to life in the middle of the night and kill you.
The company that makes these dolls is fittingly called “Clone Factory” and is located in Akihabara, Tokyo. The entire process doesn’t take much effort on the part of the model. To get your own pretty mug onto an action figure all you really have to do is plop yourself down in a chair.
From there, they project some coordinates on your face and take pictures of your head. Those pictures are fed through a computer into a ZPrinter 650 3D printer which creates the identical shape of your melon scaled down to doll size. After that, your skin tone and facial moles are all airbrushed on with a high level of detail. It even looks like they included some spinach stuck in this girl’s teeth!
Now, how much would you expect to pay to make yourself into a doll so realistic that you’d swear it scuttles around the floor every night as you sleep? A billion yen? A kajillion? Fear not – a Clone Factory doll can be purchased for the low, low price of 138,000 yen (US$1,400).
On the website Culture Japan we can see that for the steep price they still put in a fair amount of extras like original packaging that you can choose not to remove it from, and your choice of body. Honestly, the reason these ladies look so chilling seems mostly due to the out of proportion bodies they have. A storm trooper body would actually make the doll much less eerie.
