Regular readers and those familiar with Japan’s much-loved Yuki Jirushi brand of coffee will no doubt be aware of a contest to find a new mascot character for the drink that began back in April. After receiving hundreds of entries, the work was then whittled down to six potential designs, which were in turn put to a public vote for best character between July and August. To spice things up a little, some very cute girls in the cosplay/idol group Steam Girls also dressed up as the six finalists’ designs in a promotional event that caused quite a stir.
Looking at the effort involved and level of detail in each of the six designs, we here at RocketNews24 knew that choosing an overall winner would be tricky. We’ve been counting the days for the results to be announced, and today we’re thrilled to give you the full lowdown! Come and meet the Yukiko-tan crew!
The artist who received the most votes goes by the name of CH3, and not only will his character design become an official Yukiko-tan mascot character, but it will also be transformed into an official figure by professional sculptor Kanshi Touna.
While only the first prize winner gets to have their work immortalised in plastic, it’s not all gloom and doom for the five runners up by any means, as their designs will also become official Yuki Jirushi Coffee characters and be featured on the drink’s packaging.
Let’s take a look at how the finalists ranked and the number of votes they each received:
First place: CH3 (34,630 votes)
Second place: Shigatake (34,314 votes)
Third place: Manamokotan (28,161 votes)
Fourth place: mg (26,170 votes)
Fifth place: Izumi (25,680 votes)
Sixth place: Umikabe (21,306 votes)
As a way of saying thank you to everyone who voted and followed the contest from start to finish, Yuki Jirushi Coffee will also be releasing a special Yukiko-tan Christmas Package in December which will feature all six new mascot characters.
Even if you’re not a Japanese speaker, just for the superb artwork alone why not head over and check out the official Oretachi no Yukiko-tan Project? Congratulations to all six winners!
