A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…an enormous franchise was born, and with it a clearly ludicrous amount of merchandise. Perhaps the most coveted kinds of “merch” were the Star Wars toys. Thousands of figures and collectibles were made for children, although, many were snapped up by teen and adult fans. The smartest of whom would keep them in their original packaging to preserve their mint condition and value. But what good is a toy if you can’t play with it?
With a Star Wars new movie heading to cinema screens in December 2015, hundreds of new toys will be hitting the market. Just like before, the toys are aimed, at least partly, at children, but that won’t stop the grown-up fans from wanting them too.
Japanese toy maker Takara Tomy has just released four brand spanking new toys from the Star Wars universe. Hoping to get collectors in the mood, these four iconic spaceships might just whet your appetite for more Star Wars goodies come Episode VII.
- Imperial Star Destroyer and Imperial TIE Fighter
- Rebel Alliance X-wing Fighter and Millennium Falcon
Those with a keen eye will notice the wheels on the undersides of the ships. Star Wars fans will wonder why there are wheels, but a true Tomica fan will tell you they are essential. What sort of Tomica doesn’t have any wheels? After all, it is a “Tomy Car”. In order to keep them somewhat hidden, Takara Tomy decided to make them clear, or in the case of the Millennium Falcon, hide them inside the ship itself. The TIE Fighter doesn’t have any logical places for wheels, so it comes with a stand that has wheels on the bottom.

You can buy each of these ships in the Tomica Star Wars series for just 900 yen (about US$7.60) at your local toy retailer in Japan. Collectors overseas will have to look online to complete their Star Wars toy collection.
You can recreate almost all the Star Wars space battles of your dreams with just these four ships. Almost that is; bring on the A-wing, B-wing, Y-wing, TIE Bomber, Death Star, TIE Defender, TIE Interceptor, E-wing, Z95 Headhunter…
