With the release of Star Wars Episode VII less than two months away, fans (and merchandise manufacturers) are naturally hyper-excited about the myriad Star Wars related gadgets, as well as foods and drinks, that are hitting the market around the world.
Now, it looks like we may have found the ultimate collector’s item for Star Wars fans. It’s cute, it beeps, it’s a limited edition made-to-order item and best of all, it can bring you a cold can of beer—it’s the life-size, moving R2-D2 refrigerator, and it can be yours for a cool US$9,000!
That’s right, the refrigerator costs an eye-popping 1,077,840 yen ($8,921). But what does everyone’s favorite droid do for that price?
Measuring 95 centimeters (just over 3’1″) tall and weighing a hefty 55 kilograms (a little over 121 pounds), the realistic robot-shaped fridge is built with a cooling compartment in its body that will keep cans and bottles at a nice, cold temperature. The best thing by far, however, is that R2 here can even be moved with a remote controller so that he comes to you whenever you’re feeling thrsty! Fully charged, he can move around for about two hours. That’s a lot of space soda.
▼ Here are some shots of R2 from the side, behind and up-close.
As you can see, he’s created in meticulous detail, and he apparently even moves and sounds like the real R2-D2, with flashing LEDs. And, just when you thought this didn’t get any cooler, R2 also comes equipped with a projector in his head that will allow you to project images from your Miracast device.
▼ And here you can see how he “opens himself up” to cool your drinks for you!
▼ Yup, he’ll hold up to six 350 milliliter (11.8 ounces) cans to keep them nice and chilly for you.
▼ And here’s how he would look in a typical home environment. It makes for a bit of a surreal picture, doesn’t it?
The R2-D2 refrigerator is strictly made to order and will each come with its own serial number. The item is now available for pre-order from Haier Asia group’s Aqua brand—which specializes in electronic appliances such as washers, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners—through our friends at over at Tokyo Otaku Mode and is scheduled to start shipping in mid-December. Unfortunately, for those of you who seriously want a $9,000 moving fridge (which, we admit could very well be the most awesome cooling machine in the galaxy), the product can’t be shipped outside of Japan, so you’ll need to be based in the country to get your hands on one of these.
▼ Now, if that doesn’t look like something out of a movie, we don’t know what does.
▼ Who would have thought that a small moving refrigerator could be your best friend?
▼ We’ll leave you with a promotional video of the R2-D2 fridge. Enjoy!
