Looking for a free meal? Then stop by Shinjuku Station and try some Hadoken ramen!
Hardcore fighting game fans probably already know that Street Fighter V will be released in just a few days, on February 18 in Japan and February 16 in North America and Europe. But apparently developer Capcom wants to make sure that everyone and their ramen-craving grandmother knows about it — so they’ve set up a very limited-time-only Hadoken ramen shop right in front of Shinjuku Station!
▼ Staffed almost entirely by Ryu clones!
You’re probably filled with questions, so let’s get the most important out of the way first. “Did you say free ramen?”
Yes, I did! But it does come with a catch. You’ll have to take a photo of yourself in front of their giant advertisement, post it to the social networking site of your choice, and then show the staff. Twitter is recommended, since it looks you’ll be entered to win a Street Fighter V-edition PlayStation 4 and the game if you tweet your photo with the hashtag “#SF5波動.”
And here’s the advertisement you’ll have to take a picture in front of. You can pretty much choose whatever pose you want, so have fun with it!
▼ Taking a Hadoken right in the chest!
Post the photo, and then you can get in line for ramen. After showing the staff that you’ve actually posted it, all you have to do is wait for your free food! Depending on how busy they are, you might have to wait a while, so getting there a little before starting time might not be a bad idea.
▼ Waiting in line for the Hadoken ramen
▼ There are a ton of images of Ryu…
▼ …and a number of Ryu clones working the ramen shop. Here’s one…
▼ …and another…
▼ …and, holy crap, three of them?!
Pretty much everywhere you look, you’ll spot a Ryu clone, serving ramen or bottled water. But, it makes sense — this is a Hadoken-inspired ramen joint, after all!
▼ The sign reads: “Post on a social networking site and eat some ramen that’s got a Hadoken in it! / EAT A HADOKEN!!”
After a few minutes, I got my ramen and found a table to eat at! They kindly supply a bottle of water since this is supposed to be super spicy — but is it really that hot?
▼ The Street Fighter V seaweed was a nice touch.
▼ This is my “ZOMG, FREE FOOD!!” face.
Personally, I found it fairly spicy — at least to begin with — and the “Hadoken ball” definitely packed a punch. On the other hand, if you’re like Beyoncé and you keep a bottle of hot sauce in your bag, this probably won’t be the spiciest thing you eat today. Still, it has a bite that I think will appeal to most people. The noodles are pretty much spot on — not too firm or too soft — and the pork just about melts in your mouth. The broth is pretty thick too, with a good serving of chopped vegetable.
All of which is to say, the ramen, which was prepared by Ramen Kagetsu Arashi, was excellent, especially for being free!
▼ I wouldn’t have minded if the portion were a bit bigger though.
If you’re in Tokyo and looking for some free ramen, you should definitely stop by. You might even spot Chun-Li hanging out with one of the Ryu clones!
