Gudetama the fried egg looks just as good as a completely different kind of food.

In many ways, Sanrio characters Pom Pom Purin and Gudetama couldn’t be more different. Pom Pom is an eminently huggable golden retriever, while Gudetama is a lazy, gloomy fried egg.

But the pair do have a couple of things in common. They’ve both got legions of fans, and they both are about to become cool character donuts!

The Sanrio stars have been chosen to join the lineup at Ikumi Mama, the Kawasaki-based chain that makes adorable donuts shaped like everything from alpacas to cats.

The 430-yen (US$4) Pom Pom Purin donut makes its debut first. It features a unique coating made by mixing white chocolate with kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) powder, which gives Pom Pom his traditional cream color. The character’s ever-present beret is made of chocolate, and his floppy ears are actually almonds, one of Ikumi Mama’s favorite ingredients to employ in its products.

Ikumi Mama’s chefs are so creative that they often prepare the same character’s donuts with different faces, and the Pom Pom donut will be available with three different expressions (and yes, they let you pick which one you want when ordering).

We imagine coming up with a design for the 450-yen Gudetama donut must have been tough. Being a fried egg, Gudetama doesn’t really have a set shape, so Ikumi Mama cleverly decided to go with an irregularly formed white chocolate topping.

The Pom Pom Purin donuts will be offered at Ikumi Mama’s Jiyugaoka (Tokyo) and Moto Sumiyoshi (Kawasaki) branches from April 16 to 21, as well as at the Hands Expo event at the Ginza (Tokyo) branch of interior shop Tokyu Hands on April 16 and 17. Gudetama will be on sale from April 23 to 25, plus April 23 and 24 at Hands Expo.

It’s hard not to notice that Gudetama is only sticking around for half as long as fellow Sanrio rep Pom Pom, but such an aversion to hard work is totally in keeping with the character’s personality, so really, all we can do is praise Ikumi Mama for its loyalty to the source material.
