There’s so much to love about this surprising ramen dish.
The world of ramen is never boring in Japan. From chocolate flavours to mud-style broths, noodle lovers are always on the lookout for the next big thing to rock their tastebuds, and the latest find is taking them to an unlikely location: a convenience store in Ibaraki Prefecture.
▼ The red ramen curtain on the left, along with the yellow tank display and the Girls und Panzer girls on the flags outside indicate that this is no ordinary convenience store.

Called Konishiya, the one-of-a-kind conbini is as unusual as the ramen cooked up inside it. Specialising in military-themed toys like tanks and associated anime like the popular series Girls und Panzer, they often have special promotions and campaigns to entice customers to their store, and now they’re taking the tank theme to their noodles with a stellar new dish on the menu.

It’s hard to believe that a dish this good-looking can be served inside a convenience store, but the Yatai Ramen Shouya stand inside the store has built up a solid reputation in the district, with newspaper articles drawing attention to the ramen store and its unusual location.

Their new “Tank Ramen” is now making news online, with people sharing images of the impressive dish, which is priced at 3,000 yen (US$29.55) and limited to just three bowls a day.

The reason for the limited availability and high price lies in the fact that each dish contains a whopping 700 grams (24.7 ounces) of pork!

While it looks impressive, it’s said to be incredibly delicious too, with the serving of pork being wonderfully soft and tender. The dish has been well-thought out too, as the non-abundant broth is said to provide just enough flavour without making diners feel too full, despite the large size of the meal.
