On a visit to this bathroom, a printed move list is just as important as toilet paper.
Some Japanese toilets can be pretty intimidating, what with their myriad functions activated by an array of buttons and dials mounted on a control panel. Still, not every commode in Japan is so high-tech, and if all you’re looking to do is flush, the toilets in many public bathrooms have an intuitive lever you can pull.
But things weren’t so easy for Japanese Twitter user @primeset25, who recently shared this photo he snapped of a notice he came across taped up in a restroom.

It reads:
“If the toilet won’t flush, move the lever in the directions indicated by the arrows.
→ ↘ ↓ ↙ ← → ↓ (pause to charge) ↑
At some point, the water will probably start flowing.”
“This toilet is like a fighting game,” laughed @primeset25, and I’ve got to agree, the complicated motions and charge pause seem more in line with playing a video game than operating a plumbing fixture. And I’m not talking about some mamby pampy Street Fighter iteration, either. No, the necessary inputs to flush the toilet bear a stronger similarity to the ones for the notoriously tricky super moves in publisher SNK’s Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting series, such as crime lord Geese’s Raging Storm or martial artist Ryo’s Hao Shoko Ken fireball.

“Is there a D-pad you can use?”
“You have to charge…?”
“Even for a fighting game move, that’s tough.”
“I think it’s gonna give people blisters on their fingers.”
“Does it also have secret codes like ‘up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-poo?’”
This really seems like a case where the building managers should call a repairman, or maybe even just bite the bullet and shell out for a whole new toilet. In the meantime, though, at least they’ve been considerate enough to post a move sheet, like the ones found on arcade cabinets that list the characters’ special attacks, so that the occupants of this stall can pull off their bathroom break finishing move.
