The popular candy can now help keep you cool on a hot summer day.

Just in time for summer, long-standing Japanese confectionery company Morinaga is revamping one of their more popular sweets into a cool ice cream bar.

From Monday, May 29, grape-flavored Hi-Chew ice bars will go on sale at convenience stores across Japan. Hi-Chew candies are popular across the nation, and even abroad, known for their firm, chewy texture and sweet-and-sour fruity flavors.

Like the candy, the ice cream bar will have two layers – a soft, creamy inner center surrounded by a sweet, slightly tart grape-flavored outer shell. The bar will contain real fruit juice like the original candy does as well, so fans of Hi-Chew will be sure to enjoy this cool remake of their favorite chews.

Hi-Chew ice bars were sold last year in “family packs”, but this year the company has decided to sell the bars individually, making it more appealing to those who want to give the ice cream bars a try. They will cost 130 yen (US$1.15) each plus tax, and will be available for a limited time until mid-July at convenience stores only. The Hi-Chew ice bar will be a sweet way to cool down on a hot day if you’re craving something fruity, or if you’re craving something tropical, Häagen-Dazs has a crunchy coconut bar out now too. There’s no shortage of tasty treats to look forward to in Japan this summer!
