”I didn’t know what to do,” says suspect of his unwise decision.
On morning of November 9, officers from the Osaka Prefectural Police Department’s Hirakata City Precinct responded to an emergency call that had been placed from within the city. Arriving at the home where the caller had contacted them from, they discovered the body of a 44-year-old woman from Osaka City who had been involved in a romantic relationship with the home’s resident, a 48-year-old security guard.
At some time earlier this month, the woman had come over to stay overnight at her paramour’s place for an as-yet undetermined number of nights. However, according to the man, her physical condition began to deteriorate, though she did not see a doctor for a medical examination or treatment, and during the night on November 4, she passed away in her sleep. “On the night of the 4th, her body became cold,” the man said in a statement to the police. “I didn’t know what do to.”
It’s something that would cause a great deal of shock to anyone, but the man claims to have been so mentally and emotionally crippled by the incident that he kept his lover’s lifeless body in his home for five days after her death. It wasn’t until the morning of November 9 that an acquaintance of his happened to stop by and spotted the woman’s body, still clothed in her pajamas, in the man’s futon, where he was sleeping next to her (whether the acquaintance gained access to the man’s home while he was asleep or was able to see the body through an outside window has not been specified by the police).
An autopsy is planned for the woman’s body, in an attempt to determine whether she was suffering from any illnesses or to otherwise shed light on how she died. Meanwhile, the man has been arrested on charges stemming from his failure to report the incident and/or get her medical treatment if it was apparent that she was in danger. At the moment, however, the police don’t appear to be looking at him as a murder suspect, despite his apparent lack of discomfort in spending night after night sharing his futon with a corpse.
