The lovingly animated concept video is too good to be true…for now.
KitKat Japan has gone all-in on adding Japanese flair to its sweets, giving us such wonderful flavors as sake, Japanese plum wine, and Hiroshima momiji manju maple cakes. It’s also shown itself willing to splurge on premium ingredients like volcanic and ruby chocolate.
So really, a tie-up with anime/video-game franchise Pokémon seems like an entirely logical evolution for the brand. After all, it’s not like there’s no precedent for tasty Poké-food. We’ve enjoyed Pikachu ramen and Magikarp taiyaki, and there’s even a permanent Pokémon Cafe in downtown Tokyo.
With that background, we were ready to believe when he heard about an awesome animated ad for Pokémon KitKats that had appeared online. How awesome? Take a look.
The video stars Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble, the brand-new starter Pokémon for the just-unveiled upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield games for the Nintendo Switch. And since the games always give you a choice between three starters, so too do the video’s Pokémon KitKats come in three flavors: Oran Berry, Cheri Berry, and Lum Berry.
Unfortunately, if you’ve been waiting since the release of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire in 2002 to find out what those fictional fruits that appear in the games taste like, you’re going to have to keep waiting, since the video is, sadly, not an official announcement from the Pokémon Company or KitKat maker Nestlé. It’s actually a fan animation produced by YouTube channel Channy and Kimberly.
The duo has previously expressed their love for Japanese video games and advertising tropes in parody ads for products such as The Legend of Zelda’s Lon Lon Milk and an imaginary Pokémon-inspired perfume called “Ultrabeast.”
Sad as we are to have to erase “Pokémon KitKats” from our taste-test schedule just seconds after we penciled it in, the video is still awesome, and now that the idea is out there, hopefully the seed has been planted for Nestlé and the Pokémon Company to make this candy of our dreams a reality.
