Domino’s Japan is also proud that it’s new Bloody Chicken will make you look like a blood-stained zombie.
Recently, Domino’s Pizza Japan’s product development team put their heads together to come up with a few new menu items. The theme, though, wasn’t “Fun!”, “Friendship!”, or any other wholesome starts-with-an-F feelings. No, the theme was “Bloody.”
Of course, this is the time of year where you could argue that “bloody” actually qualifies as “fun” too, what with Halloween being just a little over a week away, and so Domino’s has unleashed the Bloody Halloween Pizza.
This Halloween/hemoglobin-inspired pie comes slathered in an extra-spicy bright red “Bloody Sauce,” but perhaps the more striking color is the pitch-black of its “Devil’s Crust,” as Domino’s calls it. This is Domino’s Japan’s first-ever bamboo charcoal crust, so it’ll look spooky without haunting your poo.
Between the Bloody Sauce and Devil’s Crust are mozzarella cheese and a camembert cheese sauce. And as for the toppings? At first glance they might look like sausage bits, but that wouldn’t be nearly frightening enough for a Halloween pizza. So look closer. See how they don’t have the irregular, crumbly texture of ground meat?
They almost look like they could be little monster eyeballs, but the terrifying truth is that they’re…
…tapioca!
Yes, like a zombie clawing its way out of a grave, tapioca balls, which were all the rage in the Japanese sweets scene a few years ago before falling out of the spotlight, have returned. This isn’t Domino’s Japan’s first time putting tapioca on a pizza, and honestly some of their past creations weren’t half bad. This will be their first time combining the sweetness of tapioca with the spiciness of hot sauce, though, so we’re in unexplored territory here.
If you’re looking for a side to pair with the Bloody Halloween Pizza, Domino’s Japan is also currently serving up Bloody Halloween Chicken.
This is an order of fried chicken, absolutely covered in the same Bloody Sauce as the Bloody Halloween Pizza. If it looks like it’s going to be an unholy mess to eat, that’s by design, with Domino’s happily boasting “When you get the Bloody Sauce on your hands, you’ll look just like a blood-covered zombie.”
But what if you’re OK with your food being evil, but just not spicy? Then Domino’s has two options for you, with a pair of pizzas that use the Devil’s Crust while banishing the Bloody Sauce, and each of which feature four different topping mixes per pie. The Halloween Quatro Happy is a mixed Margherita, Americano, Genovese, and Tropical pizza…
…while the Halloween Quatro 2 Happy is a mixed Margherita, Domino’s Deluxe, Grilled Chicken Teriyaki, and Mayo Shrimp.
▼ Yes, the name Quatro 2 Happy makes no sense grammatically or mathematically, but linguistics are often complicated when Domino’s Japan is involved.
Prices for the Bloody Halloween Pizza start at 1,745 yen (US$11.65) for a carry-out small, and at 1,245 yen for the Halloween Quatros, with an order of Bloody Halloween Chicken 699 yen. The whole lineup is on sale now and will be available until October 31, making it a viable option for those who’re planning at-home Halloween parties with friends now that Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward is waving off would-be street revelers.
