Despite Sony Computer Entertainment’s head honcho Kazuo Hirai going on record just 10 days ago to state that he thinks it better to let competitors make the first move when it comes to releasing details of new consoles, a sudden official announcement from Sony earlier today has whipped gamers and tech fans alike into a frenzy.
Although the electronics giant’s video, simply titled “PlayStation 2013”, does not show any actual hardware footage or make any promises, it looks a lot like a teaser for a big forthcoming announcement if you ask us.
As well as releasing the mysterious video, Sony officially stated that it will be holding its PlayStation Meeting 2013 event in New York on February 22 from 6 p.m.. Industry pundits were quick to note that it was at one such conference back in 2011 that Sony lifted the lid on its PS Vita portable console (then simply “Next Generation Portable”), giving hope to those keen to catch a glimpse of Sony’s plans for the future of home gaming.
Although it has yet to be confirmed by Sony, rumour has it that its next home console is being worked on under the code-name “orbis”, meaning “circle” or “orbit”. Coupled with the company’s most recent portable console, Vita (meaning “life”), the prospect of an interconnected video game “circle of life” is intriguing to say the least. On the same theme, watching the video for a second time and paying attention to the last few seconds in particular, we can hear what sounds like a person taking a deep breath, almost as if coming back to life or, perhaps, breathing for the first time.

*Update*
According to sources, we may well be getting our sweaty mitts on Sony’s new console prior to the end of 2013. Perhaps all will be revealed at the February 22 conference?
