Aren’t science experiments that you can do at home the best? Bored people everywhere came together to enjoy the magic that was adding Mentos to Diet Coke (and mothers who had to clean up the mess cursed its very discovery). Allow us to present you with another experiment using cola. While not as exciting as a delicious exploding fountain of awesome, you’ll feel like some kind of sorcerer as you make cola turn into clear liquid. Taken from a video that’s been making the rounds on NicoNicoDouga, a popular video sharing site in Japan, this experiment is so easy, even you can do it. Here’s how!
▼ All you’ll need is some milk, cola, and a way to get the milk into the cola.
▼ Here, the person who made the video used a long pipette.
▼ Put two pipettes worth of milk into the cola.
▼ Put the lid on the cola.
▼ Strange things will start to happen.
▼ Add some more milk.
▼ The cola will start to fizz even more.
▼ Relieve the pressure and clean up the resulting mess.
▼ Add some more milk and put the cap back on.
▼ It’s happening!
▼ It’s getting clearer!
▼ Eww.
▼ Ta-da! Clear(ish) cola!
The images may look like some kind of witch craft, but it’s just science. The phosphoric acid molecules in the cola react with the milk and cause the solids to separate out of the liquid. The matter floating around in the picture above is milk that has been curdled by the acid (much like when your Irish Car Bomb curdles because you’re too much of a wimp to chug the whole thing). Isn’t science cool?
It’s unclear how long you have to wait for the cola to lose its color, so if you decide to try this experiment out yourself, let us know how long you waited! If the pictures weren’t enough, take a look at the following video of the entire process. It’s (like) magic!
