It’s one thing to look up into the clouds and see the vague shape of some video game character you recognize or maybe a dinosaur or something. After all, clouds are slow moving and amorphous; you’re bound to see some sort of Rorschach-esque pattern in there. But would you believe that a splash of water might, just for one instant, contain something as awesome as Mario and Yoshi?

Well, turns out the Net is divided on whether this is physically possible or not, but here’s some photo “evidence” of the phenomena:

These photos are the work of insanely talented artist StudioTamago over at DeviantArt, which we’re really starting to think should be re-christened GameGeeksWithArtSkills.com. Seriously, everything over there is cosplay and somewhat disturbing paintings of realistic Mario–not that we’re complaining!

Japanese news sources seem to think the photos were made through natural means, with the aid of apparently Wolverine-esque reflexes on the cameraman’s part, with at least one outlet claiming the artist just shook a bottle of water over and over and took photos of it until the stars aligned. For our money, we don’t see how this could be the case without the aid of some kind of supervillain-style weather control machinery to hold all the water in just the right place.

Comments on StudioTamago’s DeviantArt page indicate most users think he’s taking real water splashes that might vaguely resemble the video game heroes and heavily retouching with Photoshop – which the artist does not appear to deny.

Photoshopped or not, this isn’t the first time a remarkably talented artist – and we can’t stress “talented” enough – fooled Japanese media into thinking their realistic-looking flights of fancy were the real deal.
