Is it just me, or are cakes these days starting to look less and less… cakey? With all sorts of techniques, tools, and ingredients at their fingertips, it seems like bakers can now turn cake into pretty much anything, as we’ve seen before from this cake shop in Shinjuku, that sells cakes disguised as Chinese food (you can even learn to make a bowl-of-ramen cake yourself here).
Now, that same shop, called Maplies, has come out with yet another tricky treat that looks exactly like maguro-don, a rice bowl with slices of tuna sashimi on top!
Maplies is located near the Marunouchi ticket gate at the west exit of Shinjuku Station. While you might expect to pay a pretty penny (or a yenny) for these crafty cakes, Maplies is actually quite affordable, with cakes starting at only 108 yen (about US$1). Even their newest creation, the maguro-don, is only 1,020 yen.
It looks so much like a tuna-sashimi rice bowl, it’s hard to believe it’s actually a sweet dessert!
You could easily fool someone into thinking you were having lunch instead of dessert!
▼The “sashimi” slices are actually blackcurrant-flavored gelatin!
▼The shredded “nori seaweed” on top is actually chocolate
▼A white chocolate “cucumber” slice
▼All atop a bed of sponge cake “rice”!
▼And down underneath, a final layer of strawberry mousse
▼More of Maplies’ clever creations – Chinese food, including ramen and gyoza (yep, all cakes)
▼And some Japanese fare, including oden and omu-rice
If you’re passing through Shinjuku, be sure to check them out!
