November 7 means two things to Evangelion fans in Japan: the awesome Eva-themed bullet train makes its highly-anticipated inaugural run from Osaka to Fukuoka on the Sanyō Shinkansen line; and the eagerly awaited 500 Type Eva Café opens its doors to customers at JR Hakata Station for the very first time.
To add to all the excitement, Japan Rail West has just released the very first images of the café’s exclusive original menu. From specially marked toast to Eva sweets and an Angel curry, this themed collection of edible goods is the perfect way to celebrate the official launch of the Shinkansen Evangelion Project!
The 500 Type Eva Café will be open until March 2016, the same period that the special 500 Series Shinkansen, dubbed the 500 Type Eva, is set to ride the rails. The tie-up collaboration will feature creatively designed meals, drinks and sweets served on specially marked tableware so everyone can get a bit of Eva joy on their journeys, even if they’re not one of the lucky lottery winners to ride in the life-sized cockpit on board the speeding bullet train.
▼ 500 Type Eva Curry (Shito Curry) 1,200 yen (US$9.84). The “Angels” we know from the series are actually called Shito, (literally apostle or disciple) in Japan. This black curry features the white face of an angel and is also available for takeout.
▼ The 500 Type Eva Cider costs 600 yen and contains green and purple jellies. It also comes with an exclusive coaster.
▼ The 500 Type Eva Toast for 600 yen might look like one of those toasts burnt with a “miraculous image” that sells for thousands on eBay but this one is very real and comes with strawberry, blueberry and cinnamon apple jams.
▼ The 500 Type Eva Pancakes for 800 yen come with a side of whipped cream and blueberry jam.
▼ 500 Type Eva Coffee with Cookies for 700 yen features the half-leaf logo of Evangelion manufacturer Nerv, and also comes with a specially marked coaster to take home.
▼ The 500 Type Eva Sweets Set for 1,000 yen looks a little like a purple mouse sniffing out a matcha ice cream but it’s actually a cake crafted by a famous sweet shop in Fukuoka called Strawberry Fields.
And if you duck into a Books Kiosk or Book Studio store while you’re in the area, you’ll be able to pick up one of 150,000 paper book covers, available in two designs, which come free with any book purchase.
The 500 Type Eva Cafe will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is located close to the 500 Type Eva Shop, which is also due to open from November 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you’re close to Hakata Station, be sure to pay them a visit!
