Since winning the Poster Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Market, people have been wondering what the heck CG anime Sushi Police is about. Now we know. Kind of.
This month, we finally got a look at a teaser trailer for the mysterious anime. It looks like it will be a series that will chronicle the adventures of three agents of the World Food-culture Conservation Organization tasked with policing the authenticity of Japanese food overseas. Meet leader Honda, data analyst Suzuki and android investigator Kawasaki, members of the WFCO 9th Division, otherwise known as the Sushi Police.
The teaser opens with a Japanese voice saying, “We hear the cries of sushi,” and closes with Honda declaring, “We will not abide bad sushi. Remember that.” Chilling.
According to the show’s website, the 9th Division is “notorious for their aggressive conduct and they hassle anyone serving unauthentic Japanese cuisine in the U.S., Russia, France, China, etc. They will resort to any means necessary to eliminate bad sushi.”
So, something like Lethal Weapon meets Gordon Ramsay in anime form?
On the website, other characters are briefly introduced, including Sarah, a predictably blond-haired, blue-eyed, big-busted food reporter. There’s also Carlos, the director of the WFCO, and Madam Fuji, his secretary. She also appears to be a cat.
Whatever the story, the look of the animation is certainly interesting and in addition to the release on TV channel Tokyo MX and a variety of Japanese streaming sites in January, the anime is scheduled to have a 4DX cinema release at 109 Cinemas, though it’s not yet clear what form this will take or when.
