If you are on a low-carb diet, or ever thought your beef bowls could use more beef and less rice, then this is the restaurant you need to try in Nishi-Shinjuku.
Yoshinoya is one of the many popular gyudon, or beef bowl, restaurants in Japan that deliver juicy flavor at a reasonable price. But beef and onions over rice isn’t the only dish available; they also offer gyusara (literally “beef plate”), which consists of the beef and onions from a beef bowl without the stomach-filling rice. When Yoshinoya opened a new restaurant specializing in the beef plate, we knew we had to check it out for ourselves!
Located in Nishi-Shinjuku, Gyuzara Icchou offers gyudon beef without the rice. Their basic offering is called “Kazane Gyusara Gozen” and comes with three servings of gyusara, which are served on separate plates stacked on top of each other. The three-serving version is 580 yen (US $4.80), but if you are feeling a little more “beefy” you can add extra servings for 150 yen ($1.25) each. The sky is literally the limit with how much beef you can stack on a tray!
▼ We, uncharacteristically, were only willing to go three high.
While the normal gyudon meat is pretty good, Gyuzara Icchou has a finer cut of beef that they call “bessen”. For an extra 100 yen ($0.83) per plate, you will be served a thick cut of the more succulent beef — and it is totally worth the extra yen.
▼ Don’t you wish you could eat this right now?
▼ And fear not: You won’t be completely deprived of rice!
▼ You can also upgrade to miso soup for another 100 yen ($0.83).
Gyuzara Icchou just opened their doors at the beginning of December, and this Yoshinoya spin-off restaurant knows just what beef eaters want. If you find yourself in the mood for gyudon but don’t feel like having so much rice, you should head over to Gyuzara Icchou. Just be sure to upgrade to the bessen. You won’t regret it!
