For those who aren’t entirely satisfied unless they’re able to eat their drinking vessel too.
Last week we saw the glories of reading manga from a cup, and this week the cup-festivities are staying strong with another way to spice up your drinking life.
Say hello to “Ika Glass,” a cup made out of squid meat that you can drink from, cook, and then eat.
▼ Before you ask, the answer is: because Japan, that’s why.
This novelty is created by the Hokkaido seafood specialty shop Fujiyahonten. They have a variety of foods that incorporate seafood in novel ways, such as crackers or candy, but nothing quite comes close to the WTF-factor of the Ika Glass.
Just to show off how bizarre this thing is, let’s take a look at how it’s supposed to be used, step by step:
▼ It doesn’t look so pretty once it’s out of the packaging, but hey,
it’s a cup made of squid, so expectations should be low.
▼ The cup goes best with warm sake, and honestly the thought of drinking
anything else like soda or juice out of it is just unth-ink-able.
▼ Then, once you’ve finished drinking, it’s time for the real fun to start.
▼ Ah yes, that cup is cooking nicely.
▼ I have to say I usually prefer my glasses a bit more
well-done than that, but this will do fine.
▼ Since the Ika Glass is a little hard to eat in its cup-shape,
cutting it into pieces makes the job easier.
▼ Hey, it almost looks like normal food now!
▼ Wait a minute… what’s that regular, non-squid sake glass doing there?
That’s cheating!
So… are you feeling hungry? If the Ika Glass seems like something you’d like to try out yourself, or better yet give as a present to an unsuspecting “friend,” then check out Fujiyahonten’s website. At only 1,180 yen (US$10.50) each, it’s the most confusion per square squid that money can buy.
