With things like sumo-wrestlers’ hot pot and beef sushi, the event was a feast for all of the senses!
The first-ever Tokyo Comic Con wrapped up on December 5 after a glorious weekend of booth babes, cosplayers, and an impressive appearance by Stan Lee. While comics and international pop culture were the main event, we also can’t stop reminiscing about the food that fueled hungry con-goers through the weekend.
The food area left nothing to be desired with an impressive selection of delicious-looking eats. It was hard, but we narrowed down the selection to three food booths that appeared at the convention and gave them a taste.
Izumo Soba
The perfect thing to refresh yourself with after walking through crowds all day: a bowl of soba noodles from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. For 300 yen (US$2.60) we were able to enjoy a healthy bowl of the traditional buckwheat noodles in a soy sauce-based broth, topped with nori seaweed and green onions.
Wagyū Nigiri-Zushi
Here, another quintessential Japanese food made it to our taste test: sushi! However, instead of your typical slice of raw fish on top of vinegared sticky rice, this booth was offering sushi completely wrapped with wagyū Japanese beef. The melt-in-your-mouth slices of beef paired perfectly with the fresh, clean taste of the rice, and cost 800 yen for three pieces.
Chanko Terao
Chanko nabe is a hot pot dish best known for being eaten by sumo wrestlers as part of their weight-gain diet. It generally consists of chicken or fish and a variety of vegetables simmered in a broth seasoned with sake and mirin. This particular chanko nabe didn’t skimp on the meat, and only 500 yen got us a fairly generous portion.
The food area did not disappoint, and we’re hoping that next year brings as much excitement as this year’s con, both in the pop-culture department and in our bellies!
