Now you too may be able to experience the thrill of driving over a banana peel.
You may have heard of Universal Studios’ upcoming collaboration with Nintendo: SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. We first heard about it back in December of last year. Since then, fans across the globe have been eagerly awaiting fresh news or hints as to what’s to come in terms of interactive attractions, shops, and more.
Word on the street is that one area will include a real-life version of Mario Kart. This makes sense, considering the concept art of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD features a looming model of Peach’s castle.
▼ Here’s an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and
Mark Woodbury (from Universal Creative) about the project.
How can we prove it? Well, at the moment, we can’t. But one of the service copyrights Nintendo registered for in the U.S. includes “cart race management and arrangement.” Also on the list are things like a Super Nintendo hotel, restaurant, and even a Christmas tree.
Universal Studios Japan plans to open the special area before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The same area will also open in Universal Studios California and Florida.
Netizens in Japan were intrigued. Here’s what some of them had to say.
“I want to throw shells.”
“If they can develop it using Nintendo characters other than Mario, I’m really looking forward to it. I hope they can make it exciting and fun without overloading it with too many details.”
“This is a great idea. I’d much rather do the real thing than annoy other drivers on the streets. I hope they can make high-quality carts that families as well as cart lovers can enjoy. If anyone can do it, it’s Nintendo.”
This reaction refers to Mari Cars, a service that allows you to drive Mario Kart-style carts on the streets of Tokyo. However, considering that Mari Cars has recently become locked in a battle with Nintendo over copyright infringement, the popular attraction may have to apply the brakes.
