One of anime’s most prominent same-sex romantic couplings inspires paired lingerie sets and new illustration from the series’ character designer.

While it never achieved the same cultural penetration as certain other 1990s anime hits such as Sailor Moon or Evangelion, Revolutionary Girl Utena, the surreal saga of sensual schoolgirls and swordsmanship, has remained dear to fans with whom it struck a chord. There’s now a way for Utena fans to keep the franchise literally close to their hearts, thanks to the designers at anime fashion label Super Groupies.

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the series’ original Japanese TV broadcast, and in celebration Super Groupies has unveiled a pair of lingerie sets that take styling cues from Utena’s imagery and their color schemes from the anime’s central characters.

Representing titular heroine Utena Tenjo is this navy blue bra and panty set with white and crimson trim, mirroring the uniform worn by Utena during her time at the mysterious Otori Academy. Roses figure heavily in Utena’s pervasive symbolism, and attached to the front of the both the bra and shorts are rose crests in the same shocking pink shade as Utena’s hair.

Roses also make an appearance in the lace patterning an the outer surface of the bra cups and the crotch of the panties.

If, on the other hand, you spent most of your time watching Utena expectantly, waiting for the mysterious Rose Bride Anthy Himemiya to make an appearance, she too has a lingerie set.

The design is identical to that of the Utena lingerie, but with much more vibrant color choices, mirroring Anthy’s. Once again, the distinctive hue of the character’s hair, in this case violet, is used for the hue of the rose crests.

While these lingerie sets didn’t appear in the Utena TV series itself, they do now exist in anime artwork form as well. Character designer Shinya Hasegawa has created an illustration of Utena and Anthy clad in the intimate apparel while perched atop a bed. Customers who purchase the Utena set will receive a copy of the illustration, while those who order Anthy’s set get a plastic file bearing the lingerie scene on one side and a previously used piece of promotional artwork on the back.

Both sets are made from a nylon/polyurethane blended material, priced at 8,800 yen (US$79), and can be ordered until July 2 here from Super Groupies, with delivery scheduled for late October. Unfortunately, there’s no discount for placing an order for both sets simultaneously to keep Utena and Anthy together.
