Treat yourself to the taste of a glorious rain-flecked Makoto Shinkai movie.

Japanese filmmaker, animator, and manga artist Makoto Shinkai has quickly become one of Japan’s most respected and successful directors. His hit anime film Your Name became the first non-Hayao Miyazaki-directed anime movie to earn more than 10 billion yen (US$88.5 million) when it was released in 2016, and this year, his latest feature film, Weathering with You, became just as successful, earning 10 billion yen in just 34 days after its 19 July release.

Weathering with You follows the story of teen runaway Hodaka and Tokyo girl Hina, who has the magical ability to stop the rain and clear the skies.

The immense popularity of Shinkai’s latest film has given birth to special Uniqlo T-shirts, jelly teas, and now, for a limited time, a Weathering With You exhibition showcasing some 400 items that include storyboards…

▼ Set sketches…

▼ Drawings…

▼ And beautiful background art.

The exhibition is being held in collaboration with the Japan Weather Association, which will be providing some fun and educational displays that explain the meteorological phenomena that appear in the movie.

There’ll also be some cute digital signage at the exhibition, showing daily weather information with the star characters from the film.

What’s got everyone really excited about the new exhibition, which will be held at the Matsuya department store in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district,  is the fact that two cafes inside the building will also be taking part in the Weathering with You event. At the MG Cafe on the eighth floor — the same floor as the exhibition — diners will be able to order the following items.

▼ The Shrine at the Entrance to the Sky Mojito (900 yen [US$8.33], plus tax)

A virgin mojito with Chia seeds to resemble sky fish, and mint to resemble the fluttering leaves during the scene where Hina flies through the rooftop shrine and into the sky.

The Anvil Cloud Matcha Affogato (1,000 yen plus tax)

Dry ice and cotton candy is used to recreate the world above the anvil cloud. This sweet comes with a sprinkling of matcha powder on top, and hidden beyond the clouds is a mound of ice cream.

The Raindrop Strawberry Shortcake Parfait (1,400 yen plus tax)

This raindrop-shaped dessert, designed to represent the shortcake that Hina loves, contains a variety of different textures, thanks to its layers of sponge cake, strawberry jelly, cereal pieces and ice cream.

The Above the Clouds Fluffy Chiffon Cake (1,300 yen plus tax)

Designed to look like the world above the clouds, this dish features a tea-flavoured chiffon cake that’s as light and fluffy as a cumulonimbus cloud. The cake can be enjoyed with fruit and espuma whipped cream.

The Sky-coloured Fruitnade (800 yen plus tax)

These fruity drinks are made from a herb tea that changes into different colours of the sky with the addition of lemon juice. The mango variety will turn yellow when lemon juice is added, while the peach flavour will turn orange and the strawberry flavour will turn red, representing the deep fiery colours of the setting sun.

The Utsukushikunaru Beer Garden, located on the top floor of Matsuya Ginza, will also be taking part in the Weathering With You festivities, offering the following menu items for diners.

The Anvil Cloud Pancake (1,463 yen plus tax)

A stack of pancakes filled with layers of salad and topped with a meringue anvil cloud.

▼ Hina’s Dessert Plate (1,278 yen plus tax)

An assorted platter containing strawberry cake, chiffon cake, and a black choker-shaped jelly in honour of the character Hina.

The Weather Business Colourful Parfait (1,250 yen plus tax)

This dessert has been designed in honour of the weather business created by Hodaka, Hina and Nagi in the film. The hues of a colourful sky are created with an assortment of fruit, jelly, trifle, and a coconut gel.

The Blue Sky Cream Soda (1,065 yen plus tax)

Refreshing blue soda represents a blue sky, while a layer of cream and a cotton candy garnish resembles the clouds. Deep inside the drink you’ll find a lemon jelly that even kids will enjoy.

The Sunset Orange Tea (1,000 yen plus tax)

Deep orange hues represent the colours of the sky at sunset as Hina prays towards the setting sun.

As well as being able to enjoy art and arty food and drink at the exhibition, there will also be over 300 different Weathering with You goods available to purchase, including a large number of exhibition-exclusive items and products made in collaboration with famous designers and brands.

The exhibition and collaborative menu and goods will be available from 25 September to 7 October.
