Instant curry endorsed by the heftiest of Final Fantasy’s avian mounts.

Instant ramen may be Japan’s most famous savior of hungry people who don’t want to do any real cooking, but it’s not the only option for when you find yourself in those circumstances. The country also has instant curry that comes in pouches you heat up, either in the microwave or in a pot of boiling water, and can then pour over rice for a hot meal in just a fraction of the amount of time it would take to cook curry the conventional way.

There’s a lot of variety within the instant curry pouch world too, with various levels of spiciness, as well as different seasonings and key ingredients. As of this month, there’s even Final Fantasy instant curry, personally endorsed by none other than that most gastronomically motivated of recurring creatures, the Fat Chocobo! Specifically, it’s the chubby version of the franchise’s winged mount that appears in Final Fantasy XIV that’s giving this instant curry its sign of approval.

With Chocobos having features reminiscent of ostriches, hawks, and chickens, there’s sometimes debate among fans about whether or not the creatures are edible, but so far Final Fantasy XVI is the only game in the series with explicit mentions of people eating Chocobos. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in an entirely different world, one with no known instances of chocobo consumption by humans despite having the largest variety of in-game food items of any installment in the franchise. So while the Final Fantasy XIV Fat Chocobo Curry (to use the product’s full name) does have pieces of chicken in it, publisher Square Enix isn’t pushing this as a chance to taste chocobo meat in the real world, but instead as a rich, mild-spiciness curry “in the image of the Fat Chocobo,” with its unique yellow roux meant to remind fans of the chocobo’s canary-colored feathers.

The Fat Chocobo Curry is set to be offered for sale on-site at the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Tokyo event on October 31 and November 1, but it will also be purchasable through the Square Enix online shop here, priced at 1,080 yen (US$6.80) Will it prove to be as tasty as the Resident Evil or Attack on Titan curry? We won’t know until after online sales officially start on October 16.
