The Windsor Hotel Toya put itself on the map by hosting the G8 Summit in 2008, but the appeal of the Hokkaido resort and spa remains today. The mountaintop hotel offers expansive views of the vast Lake Toya in addition to unparalleled entertainment and amenities.
I had the good fortune to stay at The Windsor this summer, and I’m going to share seven things that show that visiting this resort belongs on everyone’s bucket list.
1. Outstanding Views of Lake Toya
The first glimpse of the scenery alone is worth the cost of lodging. The huge sky stretches before you in panorama and makes you forget everything else. Of course, you don’t have to stay in your room to see these views . . .
2. Magical Clouds
The resort sits atop a 625-meter mountain, offering a unique view of the clouds over Lake Toya. The surface of the lake reflects the whimsical clouds that gather around the area in just the right amount.
3. Free Pool Access
An hour or two in an indoor pool like the one at The Windsor might run you 5,000 yen elsewhere in Japan, but access to The Windsor pool is included in the hotel charge. The kids can splash around in the pool while you relax in the jacuzzi.
4. Live Music
Musicians perform on their instruments in the lobby every day. A pianist and a cellist gave me goosebumps with their music on the night I stayed at The Windsor. Check out this piano-flute duo from a different day.
5. Bulgari Amenities
I couldn’t believe the room came stocked with luxurious Bulgari amenities. That alone would make some people want to stay at The Windsor!
6. Watch Fireworks Without Leaving Your Room
Fireworks extravaganzas launch from the shores of Lake Toya every year between April and October. The shows are a little far from the hotel, but you can still get that summertime feeling from the comfort of your own room.
7. Reasonable Rates
On off-peak nights, rates start at around 20,000 yen without meals. If you plan on eating at one of the hotel restaurants, it makes sense to buy the package beforehand because they are very expensive.
So, what are you waiting for? Make your way out to Lake Toya and stay at The Windsor Hotel Toya Resort and Spa. You won’t regret it.
