While hanging out on the washing line, they look like perfectly ordinary men’s underwear: a few splashes of colour here; some 1960s-esque female silhouettes there; a brand name emblazoned across the waistband. But these are no ordinary boxer briefs- these are Soft On Demand Underwear 2nd from one of Japan’s biggest names in adult entertainment, and each pairs hides a naughty little secret…
Although entirely unnoticeable from the outside, the inner lining (or, to be precise, the nether-region portion of the inner lining) of each pair of Underwear 2nd features an image of a black-haired beauty wearing expressions ranging from mild surprise to ‘Ooh-la-la’ and ‘Grrr,’ as we believe they’re scientifically termed.
The underwear design, while suitably cheeky and in-line with Soft On Demand’s brand image, is a concept that is perhaps not entirely alien to Japanese. As far back as the 1700s, it was considered fashionable to own clothes whose linings were comparatively soft and luxurious, or featured bright, almost inappropriate designs while the outer layer of the garment remained plain. What may have looked like perfectly normal school-wear, for example, could well have hidden a finely-woven design of popular icons from that period; essentially the Edo-era equivalent of today’s suited businessman wearing a pair of Doraemon socks or an undershirt featuring a risqué image of his favourite animé princess…
Whichever of the eight designs, we’re sure that there are plenty of people out there who would get a kick out of secretly wearing something just that little bit inappropriate to work or school; a tiny act of rebellion confined to a location that remains- or at least ought to remain- entirely out of sight.
Available in packs of two for ¥2940 from Soft On Demand
