If you or someone you know is expecting or has just given birth to a tiny person, and you’re looking for a gift that’s both cute and a little bit quirky, we may have the perfect item for you right here: Japanese online retailer Akasugu has just announced that it is now stocking baby and maternity items featuring collaborative designs between Japan’s Hello Kitty and classic kids’ picture book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is known and loved all over the world, and has been translated into more than 50 languages. It’s such a simple tale, and yet its art style and the way that the book’s pages appear to have been munched through by the titular caterpillar (or aomushi in Japanese) still manage to bring smiles to kids’ faces today.
Quite why Kitty-chan is hanging around with this peckish little squirmer we’re not sure, but we have to admit this is a pretty unique collaboration!
The store is currently offering up a special deodorising diaper/nappy pouch, designed to help reduce nasty smells while bringing the cute.
The pouch features Eric Carle’s caterpillar as we know and love him, but also Hello Kitty – complete with ribbon, of course – in various stages of insect growth, going from cocoon to beautiful cat-headed butterfly. Kind of freaky, we agree, but there’s still something undeniably charming about these designs, and we’re glad to see them reproduce Carle’s art style so accurately.
The pouches are on sale from today, so head over to Akasugu (Japanese only, sorry!) if you’re interested in picking one up. Somehow we have a feeling this isn’t the last quirky collaboration between the two kids’ favourites we’ll be seeing.
