We’ve brought you sushi doughnuts from Thailand and even cat sushi, but take a look at this Nutella sushi from France. Our office was so intrigued by the sweet Japan-inspired concoction that we sent one of our Japanese reporters over to check it out.
- Blasting off to Planet Sushi
We found the fabled Nutella makizushi at Planet Sushi, a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant in France. There was a wide variety of rolls traveling around the restaurant in what looked like flying saucers, but our reporter steered clear, honing in on the sweet and unconventional sushi he had come for.
▼ All that looks mighty tasty, but step aside, we’re here for the chocolate!
▼ Where is it??
▼ There we go.
- It takes a little courage to take that first bite
Once our reporter finally had the Nutella sushi in front of him, he couldn’t help but stop and stare. The thin crepe layered around coconut flavored rice and a healthy dollop of Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread was a sight to behold. It was so strange with its earthy colors unlike any sushi he had ever seen…he was a little scared. But our reporter mustered up some courage and gave it a try.
- Are you for real?!
Contrary to what our Japanese reporter imagined, the Nutella sushi was delicious. It reminded him of Ohagi, a Japanese sweet made with sweetened rice and azuki bean paste. He was so surprised by how good it tasted, he even went so far as to say it should be imported to Japanese conveyor belt sushi chains. Our reporter later found out that Planet Sushi also offers Nutella sushi with strawberries or bananas:

But despite the other choices, our reporter was in love with his not-so-plain Nutella maki. He snapped a few more pictures to remember his encounter.
…And took a video for good measure:
