Marketing condoms is kind of a tricky business. Unlike other products aimed at male buyers, like a juicy hamburger, ice-cold beer, or high-performance sports coupe, when it comes to condoms you can’t really make a commercial that shows the user having the time of his life while actually using the product being pushed.
So Japanese condom maker Okamoto decided to do the next best thing, and create a CG video of two Tyrannosauruses getting it on.
“Over 70 million years ago,” the onscreen text informs us, “there was not yet love in the world.” In short order, we see two Tyrannosaurs lock eyes and roar at each other.
But it turns out these two apex predators of a bygone era aren’t getting ready to mess each other up, but to sex each other up.
Award-winning CG animator Kota Morie, who’s previously lent his talents to NHK dinosaur documentaries, is the man behind the visuals, which are easily the most technically impressive simulation of dino coitus we’ve ever seen. You also have to give credit to the audio engineers, who did a great job with the video’s slappy, squishy sound effects.
But what inspired Okamoto to adopt this odd strategy in promoting its ultra-thin Okamoto Zero One condom? Last December, the company surveyed 400 men and women, asking them when the last time they saw a condom advertisement was. Only 12 percent recalled seeing one within the last month, while 19 percent said they hadn’t seen one in the last six months, and more than half (54 percent) replied that they’d never seen a condom ad in their life.
Looking over these figures, Okamoto realized the need for a unique yet sharable promotion, and thus the intimate video of the two reptilian lovers was made.
▼ Because really, once you know what a Tyrannosaurus’ o-face looks like, how can you be expected to keep that knowledge to yourself?
Okamoto’s creativity extends all the way to the end of the video. Rather than take the obvious route and sign off with something clichéd like “Okamoto condoms will make you a T. Rex in the bedroom!”, the ad’s producers chose to give it one final twist: The male star is an overly enthusiastic lover.
▼ Much to his partner’s angry disappointment
So remember guys, whether you’re part of the Tyrannosaurus rex or homo sapiens species, it’s important not only to use protection, but to pace yourself too.
