Listen to the ballad for Bulbasaur, the ode to Eevee, and many, many more.
It’s amazing that, even after 20 years, Pokémon continues to inspire fans all over the world to create awesome works of art based on the game. The series clearly that had a big impact on a lot of people’s lives, but one fan especially has been gaining a huge following recently after showing off his devotion to Pokémon through a different artistic medium: music.
Jacob Newman, who goes by the name Jacob Norman Chainsaw-Arm online, is aiming to be the very best by creating short songs inspired by each and every one of the 700+ Pokémon.
Jacob is “only” about 100 Pokémon into the massive project, but that’s more than enough to get a sampling of some of his work. As with all undertakings this huge, some of the songs are arguably better than others, but we’ve chosen some of our favorites to share with you here.
Here’s what was most likely Jacob’s first creation, a short 20-second song about good old Pokémon number 001: Bulbasaur. (Click play button to play, lyric highlights below.)
Bulbasaur, you’re the first one I adore.
You’re not the worst and well it’s the start.
So many to choose, and oh they began with you.
You’re that good kinda poison. I think you’re so smart!
▼ “Too bad, ’cause it’s all for Ivysaur”
has to be one of the best lines in music history.
…
Grab it from the sun.
It’s good for everyone.
But if you want some more
Too bad, ’cause it’s all for Ivysaur.
▼ Anyone who’s ever been through a
Pokémon cave before can sympathize with this song.
I know you’re upset to see me again
But don’t blame it on me if we hang out in the same places.
…
I’m told that I’m a dime a dozen. As common as can be
But that don’t mean that I don’t have feelings. Just because I can’t see
▼ Poor Gloom… I never knew!
Poison is dripping out of my mouth.
Reeks so foul, it’s no wonder you don’t want me around.
I’m leaking all over from my hair to my toes.
No one loves me so I’ll sit in my garden alone.I have no roots here.
So long to my perfume career. When I’m relaxed I release gas.
Even when I’m happy I release gas.
When I’m sad I release gas.
I got no class.
▼ Eevee’s song is both cute and kind of inspiring.
So many possibilities
And yet you see the best in me.
I can be anything you want me to be.
Grass, water, ice, or even electricity.
If you want to hear more of Jacob’s work, then check out his Bandcamp page or Tumblr. There’s a lot of variety in the genres of music—folk, rock, pop, and more—so which songs people like are going to vary wildly.
It’s going to be a long journey to create a song for every single Pokémon, but if you’d like to help Jacob see it through to completion, then be sure to let him know you’re cheering for him to sing ’em all!
