Is this the movie that will put an end to the streak of bad live-action anime remakes?

Recently it feels hard to get excited about live-action remakes of anime series. There have been so many bombs the past several years including the abominable Dragonball Evolution, the miserable Attack on Titan films, and the controversial yet-to-be-released Ghost in the Shell movie.

Which is why we’re going into the upcoming Fullmetal Alchemist live-action film with a certain amount of caution. Sure, it has an all-Japanese cast, it’s shot on location in Italy to give it that European flavor and scenery to match the original, and there hasn’t been any announcement of a “part two” film as are so frequent these days… but does all that mean it will be good?

Well the first trailer for the movie was just released, so take a look and see what you think: (scroll down for highlights)

▼ A steam train runs through European fields, and the words say:
“The incredible, fated trip of two brothers.” Is it… the Weasley twins?

▼ No! It’s Edward Elric,
taking his alchemy-summoning stance.

▼ A transmutation circle… nothing could go wrong with that!
Speaking of things going wrong, where’s Edward’s brother Alphonse?

▼ Ah, there’s that lovable suit of armor.
Edward says to him: “I will get your body back.”

▼ Aw, I guess the trailer is over alrea-
WHOA WHAT IS THAT?!

Personally, I’m excited to see where this live-action remake goes. Like we speculated before when word about the movie first got out, it feels like the film will be concentrating on just the very beginning of the series, rather than trying to cram everything into an hour and a half movie. Plus Fullmetal Alchemist has already had several other successful versions released, which bodes well for the film.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you looking forward to it, or do you think it’s just going to be a homunculus of its former self? Let us know in the comments!
