The clip shows a number of jaw-dropping ideas for the spa-filled amusement park, including onsen carousels and roller coasters filled with spring water.
With so much volcanic activity, Japan is filled with thousands of natural hot springs known as onsen, and people around the country often travel to different spa resort regions to soak in therapeutic waters while also soaking up the distinct atmosphere of the town.
One of the most famous onsen regions is located in the city of Beppu, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, which boasts the highest yield of hot spring water in the world. With more than 2,000 onsen for visitors to choose from, Beppu is already a popular tourist destination, but now the mayor of the city is pushing for even more recognition, by pledging the opening of a spa-themed amusement park if their new promotional video reaches 1 million views.
▼ Take a look at the video below.
No expense was spared in filming the video, as 150 extras were hired to dress up in towels and parade around Beppu’s Rakutenchi amusement park for the clip. The local fire department also helped out, by transporting more than 12 tonnes of spring water to the park from the original source, for an authentic result.
▼ Not a bad day’s work for these extras, who got paid to soak in an onsen.
While there’s no news on what the city has in mind for the onsen amusement park if it were to become a reality, we certainly hope it involves a trip up a mountain in a cable car with seating inside tubs of hot spring water.
▼ And now we’ve seen a carousel with happy bathers, it’s something we desperately need to try!
With viral videos like Piko Taro’s many versions of “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” taking the world by storm, the city of Beppu is hoping the world will sit up and take notice of this unusual pledge by the mayor.
Currently, the video has received nearly 168,000 views at the time of writing, in just two days since its release, so we’ll be watching and sharing the clip again and again in the hopes of making this dream a reality!
