Pop-up cafe caters to fans of mature aesthetics and sweet treats with customizable desserts served in cocktail glasses.
Sweets fans across Japan were saddened in 2013 when Häagen-Dazs closed its last ice cream shop in the country. Sure, you can still buy Häagen-Dazs-brand ice cream in supermarkets and convenience stores, but no longer being able to say “Oh, there’s a Häagen-Dazs! Let’s take a break and stop in for a snack” is one less opportunity to enjoy ice cream, and we don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say our lives are a little poorer for it.
But thankfully, Häagen-Dazs is making a brief reappearance on the Tokyo restaurant/cafe scene. On March 24, the Häagen-Dazs & Lounge will be serving customers in the Jingumae neighborhood, not too far from Harajuku Station.
Jingumae is a swanky part of Tokyo, and so the & Lounge sports not only an avant-garde name, but also a posh interior. The two-tone color scheme isn’t just for aesthetic purposes, either, as it’s a salute to Häagen-Dazs Crunchy Crunch Double Cookies & Cream ice cream bar, which will be going on sale later in the month, and to its regular cookies and cream flavor, which joined the company’s product lineup 25 years ago.
Customers have their choice of a scoop of either double or regular cookies and cream ice cream, served in an elegant cocktail glass. Once you’ve got your glass in hand, head on over to the bar counter, where you can add your choice of light or dark-colored toppings such as dried blueberries, black sesame macarons, bamboo charcoal rusk biscuits, white strawberries, meringue, marshmallows, and coconut chips.
Unfortunately, the Häagen-Dazs & Lounge pop-up store will only be open for two days, as it closes March 25. Still, it’s a two-day window in which to elevate eating one of our favorite desserts to a sophisticated social gathering, and the & Lounge’s location makes it a great starting point for an ice cream shop crawl across downtown Tokyo.
