We try one of the most rare and sought after drinks in the country.

Starbucks has been satisfying our cravings for new and exclusive menu items over the years with some amazing limited-time releases and seasonal collections, but now they’re really aiming to increase the desirability factor, by releasing a new beverage limited for sale at one location in the country.

Called the Minty Chocolate Tea Frappuccino, the new beverage is only available at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, where it can be found at four Starbucks branches across the commercial complex: Roppongi Hills Metro Hat/Hollywood Plaza, Roppongi Hills West Walk, Roppongi Hills West Walk Lounge, and Tsutaya Tokyo Roppongi.

We stopped by to purchase the new drink, where signs advertising the hot and cold Minty Chocolate Teas outside and inside the store let us know that this was a “Roppongi Hills Exclusive Beverage”.

It was a cool and cloudy day, so we decided to order the hot Minty Chocolate Tea, and when we laid eyes on it for the first time, it looked just as pretty as we’d hoped.

Inside the drink is a Teavana Mint Citrus tea leaf blend, mixed with milk and chocolate sauce, while the top is garnished with a mound of whipped cream, a chocolate sauce drizzle and a sprinkling of cacao nibs.

Bringing the tea to our lips, we could smell a faint and enticing mint aroma, which was a perfect prelude for what was to come.

Taking our first sip, we felt the cold whipped cream on our tongue first, followed by the warm tea, which covered our taste buds with the rich, milky flavour of chocolate before leaving us with a refreshingly subtle spearmint aftertaste.

It was a fantastic combination, and one that even the most timid of choc-mint lovers will love, due to its milky texture and subtle mint flavour. While Starbucks is yet to announce whether this beverage will become a regular menu item at Roppongi Hills, or if it will only be available for a limited time, both drinks are currently being sold in a tall size only, at 570 yen (US$5.20) for the Frappuccino and 470 yen for the hot version.

The only downside to these drinks is the fact that they’re not available to purchase nationwide, or even citywide in Tokyo, so if you’re in the capital, we highly recommend making the trip to Roppongi Hills to get a taste of the rare Starbucks beverage while you can!
