Full moon inspires pizzas with a whole lot to love.

It was a great day in the history of Japanese food culture when someone cracked an egg into a bowl of noodles and said “Hey, that looks like a full moon!” as it cooked in the heat of the broth. Thus was born tsukimi (“moon-viewing”) noodles, and because historical milestones can serve as inspiration for great minds of the future, in time Japanese restaurants began to apply the tsukimi concept to hamburgers, and now we have tsukimi pizza too.

With autumn being the traditional time for moon-viewing parties in Japan, Pizza Hut Japan is baking up multiple types of tsukimi pizza. But it wouldn’t make sense to simply put an egg on top of a pie and call it tsukimi, since there’s already a name for pizza with egg, Bismarck pizza, which is something you can find at lots of pizzerias and Italian restaurants in Japan.

So instead, Pizza Hut Japan is giving its tsukimi pizzas additional doses of Japanese appeal, starting with the Sukiyaki Tsukimi Pizza.

This pizza is topped with strips of sukiyaki beef, seasoned with the same sweetly savory sauce used for sukiyaki hot pot. They’re accompanied by a melty egg sauce, and also shungiku, edible chrysanthemum leaves, a high-class green that’s also a common sukiyaki ingredient. Together, they give you a mix of meaty, sweet, creamy, and slightly bitter notes, for a complex but satisfying and hearty pizza.

Arriving alongside the Sukiyaki Tsukimi Pizza is the Terimayo Tsukimi Pizza.

That abbreviation is for “teriyaki mayonnaise,” as both are viable flavor choices in Japan’s casual pizza sphere. The Terimayo Tsukimi features the same egg sauce as its sukiyaki menu-mate, but forgoes the chrysanthemum leaves and goes with teriyaki chicken instead of beef for its protein.

For those having trouble picking between the two, or who are finding themselves wondering about other applications of the tsukimi concept to pizza, Pizza Hut Japan also now has the Sukiyaki Tsukimi no Gochiso 4, or “Sukiyaki Tsukimi Feast 4,” that’s one quarter each of Sukiyaki Tsukimi, Terimayo Tsukimi, Bulgogi Tsukimi, and Kurobuta Pork Tsukimi.

And if you’re intrigued by the idea of full moon-inspired pizza, but not yet ready to go full tsukimi, the Sukiyaki Tsukimi Variety 4 gives you one quadrant each of Sukiyaki Tsukimi, Terimayo Tsukimi, Margherita, and Deluxe Pizza.

Prices vary by size and type, but range from 1,100 to 3,150 yen (US$6.90-US$19.80) for carryout orders and 1,580 to 4,500 yen for delivery. Pizza Hut Japan has gotten into the tsukimi mood early this year, as all four of the above pizzas are available now and will be on sale through November 1.
