Poor old Luigi just can’t catch a break. Often only taken out of the box when a second player joins the game, forced to stand idly by as his brother Mario gets to smooch the princess, and reduced to the role of comical, vacuum-wielding scaredy cat in his haunted house adventure games…
Even in this, “The Year of Luigi”, wherein creators Nintendo put the man in green under the limelight, it seems that Luigi’s red-capped brother has managed to get his famous face onto what is supposed to be a special edition Nintendo 3DS celebrating all things Luigi.
Due to go on sale on July 18 this year alongside Mario & Luigi RPG 4: Dream Adventure, this limited edition Nintendo 3DS console is plastered with Luigi silhouettes in varying shades of green and stamped with a commemorative 30th anniversary “The year of Luigi” emblem.
Moments after it had been revealed online, however, keen-eyed gamers overseas noticed that something was amiss on the handheld’s underside.
Unless Luigi has been eating a little too much pasta or our eyes are playing tricks on us, the silhouette in the top-right corner belongs to none other than goomba stomping, 1-up nabbing leading man Mario. That sneaky little guy; he just can’t let Luigi have a few seconds of fame, can he!?
It’s not yet clear whether this is an intentional move by Nintendo or a temporary oversight, but one thing’s clear: Luigi must have the patience of a saint.
