These beautiful scaled dioramas let you walk the streets of Tokyo or Hiroshima again and again.
3-D printing company iJet recently teamed up with map specialist Zenrin to create a new line of cityscapes so detailed they look like they belong in a local museum. With three locations to choose from, in a variety of sizes, these beautiful 3-D maps display all the roads, highways, and buildings you would find in real life, and give you a bird’s-eye view of the area so you can relive your journey in the town all over again.
▼ One of Tokyo’s best-known landmarks, Tokyo Tower, rises up from the small-scale city in beautiful detail.
▼ The surrounding area is faithfully recreated with the use of 3-D urban modelling data.
▼ Jingu Stadium, another famous Tokyo landmark, is also recreated in glorious detail.
▼ Located in Shinjuku, the baseball stadium is owned by Meiji Shrine and is home to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows professional baseball team.
A visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, known as Genbaku Dōmu (“Atomic Bomb Dome”) in Japanese, can be a moving experience. 3-D models like these, providing a view of the city before and after the dropping of the atomic bomb in 1945, can be seen at the Peace Memorial Museum nearby.
▼ This model shows the thriving city of Hiroshima as it stands today, with the large, moat-surrounded castle on the bottom left, and the Atomic Bomb Dome on the top right.
▼ The Atomic Bomb Dome is located on the tree-filled, triangular-shaped area to the left of the river.
The three maps in the range are priced from 9,800 yen (US$87) for a small, 10-centimetre (3.9-inch) square-sized model up to 140,000 yen for a large, 30-centimetre sized model. The company also accepts requests to recreate any location in 3-D model format so if you’d like to see your neighbourhood spring to life inside a beautiful photo frame, be sure to check out their website for more details.
