New kicks feature detachable soul gem charms.
When it premiered on Japanese TV in 2011, it’s doubtful anyone suspected that Puella Magi Madoka Magica was going to be as successful as the anime franchise has become. Sure, it had a script by Gen Urobuchi, one of the anime industry’s most respected writers, but it was still a magical girl show for grown-ups with a slow-paced start and no previous source material from which to draw preexisting fans.
Three theatrical features and several spinoff projects later, it’s clear that Madoka Magica has legs. It also has shoes, and plenty of them. Following its line of pumps inspired by the anime two years ago, anime fashion retailer Super Groupies has released a new collection of Madoka Magica sneakers.
There’s a pair to match the image color of each of the series’ principal characters: Madoka, Homura, Mami, Kyoko, and Sayaka, arranged clockwise in that order from top left in the image above.
▼ Of course Kyoko’s model has a case of the munchies.
The sneakers are sporty yet feminine, with both laces and a side zipper.
Things get girlish around back, with a bow and dangling charm styled after the magical girls’ soul gems. They’re both removable, by the way, just in case the bow is too cutesy for your look that day or you’re worried that, like the anime characters themselves, you might die if your soul gem gets damaged.
Each of the five designs is priced at 11,000 yen (US$92) and can be ordered here from Super Groupies. Delivery is scheduled for mid-June.
